The countdown to a possible playoff spot continues for SD Loyal. And it marches on with another road match, this time at LA Galaxy II. This is the fourth and final meeting between these two teams. Coach Landon Donovan’s team has won all three matches against “Los Dos” this season, outscoring the Pacific Division rival 8-4. SD Loyal beat LA Galaxy II 2-1 twice (June 12 and Aug 1) and beat Los Dos 4-2 in the latest affair between the club on Sept. 5 at Torero Stadium at USD. But perhaps no match against the rival from Los Angeles has been more important than this one for SD Loyal. It is looking to earn as many points as possible as it heads into its final six games of the 2021 USL Championship season.
Donvan’s squad is seeking a postseason berth, the first in just the second season of the club’s existence. Aside from clinching a potential playoff spot, the club is looking to secure the second place spot in the division in order to possibly host a playoff match for San Diego and its fans.
The quest begins with the final month of play in the regular season this Saturday. It is one-of-three remaining road matches for SD Loyal. Donovan’s team could be in a good position with a win at LA Galaxy II as it will then host a home match Oct. 9 against Sacramento Republic. But before looking at that match, SD Loyal wants to secure points at Dignity Health Sports Park.
After all, SD Loyal is coming off a 4-2 win against Las Vegas Lights last week where it displayed a dominant form of attacking soccer. Donovan has an arsenal of attackers at his disposal and is beginning to see some of his injured starters begin to recover and possibly return just in time to finish the regular season and clinch a playoff spot.
SD Loyal will have an addition to its roster for those remaining six regular season matches. It acquired midfielder Blake Bodily on loan from MLS side Portland Timbers this week.
The 23-year-old from Eagle, Idaho adds depth and more youth to the club's midfield. Bodily won't be eligible to play with SD Loyal if it reaches the playoffs.
LA Galaxy II is coming off a 3-0 win against division leader Phoenix Rising Wednesday night. Some might say it was a surprising win. Los Dos took a 1-0 lead when Phoenix’s Edward Delgado sent in an own goal in the 77th minute. It was all LA Galaxy II in the second half with goals from Preston Judd (Jonathan Perez assist) and Jorge Hernandez.
The push for playoff spots became more interesting with LA Galaxy’s last three wins heading into its final stretch of the regular season. LA Galaxy II remains in the hunt with a 9-5-11 record and 32 points. It sits above the playoff line in the No. 4 spot of the standings after beating Phoenix. Los Dos has won three-straight, also beating Oakland Roots 1-0 on Sept. 18 and beating Sacramento Republic 2-0 on September 26. Phoenix has already clinched one of the four available playoff spots for the division.
