San Diego, CA (Sept. 7, 2021) -Forward Corey Hertzog was voted USL Championship Player of the Week after he scored a pair of goals to lead SD Loyal’s 4-2 win against the LA Galaxy II Sept. 5.
Hertzog is also part of the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 20 of the 2021 regular season, announced by the league Tuesday.
Hertzog, a Pennsylvania native, was SD Loyal’s first off season acquisition last winter as coach Landon Donovan and his staff wanted to add firepower to its attack. It did just that with Hertzog, who is now tied as the league’s second all-time leading scorer with 72 goals. Two of those came against LA Galaxy II. He also completed 22 of 36 passes and won 4 of 6 duels.
A four-time Championship All-League selection during his career, Hertzog sits tied for second on the club with five goals this season. The veteran’s brace also moved him to 72 regular-season goals level with former Charlotte Independence forward Jorge Herrera. Hertzog will have his first chance to take sole possession of second place on Saturday when SD Loyal visits Oakland Roots SC at Laney College Field.
Hertzog earned 40 percent of the ballot to claim the award. OKC Energy FC’s CJ Cochran finished second on 30 percent after recording 13 saves across a pair of contests during the week, including a seven-save shutout against Memphis 901 FC on Wednesday night. Hertzog is also the third SD Loyal player selected with the Player of the Week Honor (2020 Rubio Rubin and 2021 Alejandro Guido) in the club’s two seasons.
The Championship’s Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship.
SD Loyal has won back-to-back matches as it heads on the road against Oakland Roots and then it’s slated to host Tacoma Defiance Sept. 19 in its next home match.
