The Loyal begin a two-match road trip with a Week 15 affair against Tacoma Defiance

THURSDAY: SD Loyal is back on the road after more than a month of home matches. The Loyal begin a two-match roadtrip with a Week 15 USL Championship affair against Pacific Division rival Tacoma Defiance. The midweek match is slated to be broadcasted on Fox 5 San Diego and Azteca America 33 in Spanish.

This is the second meeting between these teams this season. SD Loyal is coming off a 1-0 loss at home against Phoenix Rising that capped a four-game road stance in which Donovan’s team had a 3-1 record. SD Loyal enters this match at 6-5-3 with 21 points. Tacoma Defiance is 3-4-4 with 13 points in the standings.

Manager Landon Donovan continues to praise his players for the commitment and performance after each match. It was no different after SD Loyal’s 1-0 loss to Phoenix Rising last weekend. His team played the type of match Donovan wanted but Phoenix sat back to defend and found opportunities in the counterattack. Donovan doesn’t want his team to change that. He wants his team to continue playing its game despite the opponent. SD Loyal will attempt to get back on the winning side when it visits Tacoma Defiance.

This is SD Loyal’s eighth road match this season. Donovan’s club is 1-4-2 away from Torero Stadium where it was unbeaten in six games before losing to Phoenix. It’s been more than a month since SD Loyal played a match on the road. It beat Las Vegas Lights 2-1 June 25.

Tacoma Defiance is coming off a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy II on July 11. It hasn’t won a match since beating LA Galaxy II 2-0 at home on June 27. That is more than a month without a win as coach Wade Weber‘s team hasn’t played a game in nearly two weeks. That’s because its match against Oakland Roots July 17 was rescheduled for September due to multiple persons on the Roots covered persons list tested positive for COVID-19. Tacoma is 1-1-3 in its last five games in which it also had to make some roster adjustments as a handful of young players signed emergency contracts with MLS side Seattle Sounders last week. These are temporary contracts signed by Tacoma’s Samuel Adeniran, Juan Alvarez, Obed Vargas and Alex Villanueva as Seattle had a shortage of players to face Austin FC as it only had 12 available players to field. Vargas was in the starting XI for that match. Tacoma had also just signed defender Cody Baker, 17, off the Sounders FC Academy last week.
