Players talk about it all the time. “Take one game at a time,” they say. It is a quote that might come across as cliché. For SD Loyal players and coach Landon Donovan, it’s the way to approach each match. There is no other way. At least that’s how the club has been approaching this season. It appears to be paying off as of late as SD Loyal enters this match against Orange County SC on an eight-match unbeaten streak after starting the season 0-4.

Taking each step with every match could continue to work for SD Loyal. It will have to show it with this match against the second place team in the division. SD Loyal sits in third place with three points fewer than Orange County. SD Loyal is coming off a friendly against Club Tijuana Xolos of LIGA MX this past weekend in a game that had Donovan use all of its players. There were some that rested but his roster got some minutes to stay up beat during a weekend with no league games for SD Loyal. It now faces one of the hottest teams in the league, currently.

Orange County SC is coming off a 2-0 win against Sacramento Republic July 10, part of an eight-game unbeaten streak. Orange County has not lost since its 4-3 loss against LA Galaxy II May 29. It comes into this match as one of the hottest teams in the USL Championship. And perhaps many didn’t expect it to be this way. But regardless of the predictions, Orange County is riding this wave trying to remain in second place as it visits SD Loyal, who is also on an eight-game unbeaten streak. The last time these two clubs met they played to a 1-1 draw in Irvine with goals by Tumi Moshobane and Ronaldo Damus. This could prove to be an important match as both teams vie to catch first place Phoenix Rising FC in the Pacific Division standings. Orange County SC is trying to make its way back into the post season after a lackluster finish to the 2020 season. It lost five of its remaining seven matches. The club spent the offseason trying to retool its attack. It brought back some of its dangerous attackers.
