San Diego, CA (January 26, 2021) – San Diego Loyal SC (SD Loyal) announced today that Midfielder Morgan Hackworth and Forward Ben Spencer will remain under contract for its 2021 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval. The USL Championship announced last week that the 2021 regular season will begin on or around May 1.
"Ben and Morgan are an integral part of our club in every way,” said Landon Donovan, EVP of Soccer Operations and First Team Manager. “They are invaluable members of our team on the field and revered off the field. We are ecstatic to have them both back for 2021 and look forward to working with them again."
Midfielder Hackworth, 24, made 7 appearances, logging 375 minutes for SD Loyal in its inaugural season. Hackworth made his SD Loyal debut on July 25, 2020 against Las Vegas Lights FC before consistently being on the active roster and ending the season with four consecutive starts. Prior to his making his mark with SD Loyal, Hackworth played for Memphis 901 and is the son of former soccer player and current Louisville City FC Head Coach John Hackworth.
Forward Spencer, 25, joined SD Loyal right before the restart of the 2020 season after the COVID-19 halt. He made 11 appearances logging 338 minutes. Prior to joining SD Loyal as a key signing as the club returned to play after a hiatus due to COVID-19, Spencer played for USL Championship club Phoenix Rising FC and had stints at Molde FK, Indy Eleven, Toronto FC II, Toronto FC and FC Tuson.
