San Diego, CA (Dec. 10, 2020) – San Diego Loyal SC (SD Loyal) announced today the signing of Forward Corey Hertzog, pending league and federation approval. Hertzog is the first new addition to the 2021 team following the announcement of seven returning players earlier this week.

“Since the day I started this job, I've had my eye on Corey and wanted to see him in Torrey Green,” said Landon Donovan, EVP of Soccer Operations and First Team Manager. “We are thrilled to have a player of his quality and experience join our team.  His work ethic, goal scoring ability and leadership will be a huge asset to us in 2021 and beyond.”

Hertzog, 30, boasts 67 goals and 18 assists in the 179 appearances of his USL career. Prior to making his first professional appearance drafted 13th overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by New York Red Bulls, he was a Penn State All-American. The striker had stints at various other professional teams including Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Saint Louis FC. Most recently, Hertzog was with Reno 1868 FC for two seasons, scoring 27 goals and assisting on 10 others, which led to a consistent spot on USL’s “Team of the Week” before the team folded due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’m extremely excited and thankful for this opportunity to join a fantastic club like San Diego Loyal,” said Hertzog. “I can’t wait to represent this club with everything I have on and off the field. I’m especially excited to score goals in front of the fan base – maybe a ‘Loyal Leap’ after each one. That would be fun.”
