Jack Metcalf scores first goal at University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium

San Diego, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2020) – San Diego Loyal Soccer Club (SD Loyal) reached another milestone as it heads into its inaugural season. The USL Championship team earned a 1-0 win in an international preseason friendly match against Costa del Este FC of Panama in its first game at University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium. Jack Metcalf scored the goal for SD Loyal.

It is also the first win on the home field for SD Loyal manager Landon Donovan who watched and celebrated as his English midfielder buried the game-winning goal.

Metcalf gave SD Loyal the 1-0 lead in the 44th minute when he put back an Irvin Parra shot from left to right from just inside the penalty box. Avila’s shot was blocked by Costa del Este goalkeeper Kevin Melgar as he dove to his left. Metcalf was charging on the ball and didn’t waste his chance to bury a shot into the back of the net, beating a diving Melgar. It was the first goal for SD Loyal at this stadium and the first for Metcalf with his new team. Metcalf, who signed with SD Loyal in this off season, celebrated his score with teammates just outside the penalty box, sending the San Diego crowd into frenzy.

The cheering began early in the match as SD Loyal came out pressuring from the start, looking to penetrate through the middle of the field. SD Loyal came close to sending in its first goal at this stadium ten minutes into the game.

Parra nearly had a score of his own when he curled a left-footed shot from just inside the penalty box zoomed just wide of the left post. SD Loyal threatened again in the 24th minute when Yair Jaen fired a right-footed shot looking for the lower right corner, nearly scoring against his former team. But a diving Melgar blocked it with his left fist for the standout save.

SD Loyal continued to pressure Costa del Este, a team from Panama’s first division, in the second half. Costa del Este was able to neutralize SD Loyal’s ball movement after Parra was sent off with a red card in the 60th minute. Costa del Este moved its lines up field with the extra space but SD Loyal kept Costa del Este out of the net. The Panamanian side threatened with a free kick by Jose Muñoz in the 70th minute but SD Loyal goalkeeper Jake Fenlason was in position to catch the shot at his goal line.

SD Loyal now heads to Nevada to face Reno 1868 FC in another preseason match Saturday Feb. 28 at Greater Nevada Field. Coach Donovan’s team makes its USL Championship debut Saturday March 7 against Las Vegas Lights at Torero Stadium.
