SD Loyal players earn honors after stellar performances in Colorado Springs
SAN DIEGO (July 18, 2023) – San Diego Loyal SC forward Adrien Perez and midfielder Blake Bodily were named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for their performance in the club’s 5-0 win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on July 14.
Perez, the Ontario, Calif. native, scored a goal and recorded a pair of assists as he was directly involved in each of the team’s goals. Bodily had a pair of the club’s goals, helping his team earn three more points in the Western Conference standings.
Perez scored the second-fastest goal in club history (just behind Kyle Vassell’s 16-second strike in a 2-1 win at Las Vegas in 2022) when he found the back of the net 35 seconds into the match. The shifty forward took a ball from Collin Martin after kickoff and worked his way to the top of the penalty box. He slipped through defenders and fired his left-footed shot to open the scoring. Perez continued to be a threat throughout the match, recording five shots overall and two assists on scores from Bodily and Elliot Collier. The former D.C. United striker also had a hand in Bodily’s first score, making a piercing run up the right flank before pulling the ball wide to Joe Corona, who served the cross to Bodily. Tumi Moshobane’s goal was also a product of Perez’s efforts as it was a shot from Perez that ricocheted off the left post before falling to Tumi in front of an open net. Perez now has five goals and two assists this season.
Bodily’s first score came nine minutes into the match before he scored again in the 30th minute to increase the SD Loyal lead to 3-0. The speedy midfielder first found the net via header off Corona’s service. Twenty-one minutes later, Bodily’s second score once again came off his head, set up this time by a pin-point cross from Perez. Bodily completed 16 of 20 passes overall while winning 2 of 3 duels defensively on the night. With the brace, Bodily has now earned three goals on the season.
This is the first time both Perez and Bodily have earned USL Championship Team of the Week honors. The pair are the sixth and seventh SD Loyal players to be named to a USL Championship Team of the Week in 2023.
Midfielder Alejandro Guido was named on June 20 for his performance in a 2-2 draw against San Antonio FC on June 14. Striker Ronaldo Damus was voted Player of the Week on June 6 for his brace in the club’s 3-3 draw at San Antonio FC. Joe Corona was named in April, while Koke Vegas and Jackson Simba were each honored in March. Corona earned the recognition for his performance in the club’s 1-0 win against Tampa Bay Rowdies on April 23. Vegas was named to the best XI for his shutout outing against Phoenix Rising FC on March 19 while Simba attained opening week honors after scoring the game-winner against Detroit City FC in SD Loyal’s season opening 1-0 win.
