SD Loyal midfielder earns honors after scoring in draw against San Antonio FC
SAN DIEGO (June 20, 2023) – San Diego Loyal SC midfielder Alejandro Guido was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for his performance in the club’s 2-2 draw against San Antonio FC on June 14 at Torero Stadium. The Chula Vista native earned the honors after scoring the opening goal in the 10th minute against the defending league champion, helping his team to another point in the Western Conference standings.
Guido nearly scored his second goal of the season during the match when he smacked a shot off the crossbar in the second half. He was also an integral part of the club’s attack and defensive recovery strategy. Guido had four shots and three chances created overall while winning three of four tackles and seven of 11 duels in an impressive all-around display.
Guido is no stranger to earning Team of the Week Honors. The midfielder was selected twice in 2022, three times in 2021, including one Player of the Week recognition, and once in 2020. He was also named to the All-League Second Team in 2022.
The veteran midfielder has continued to be an integral part of SD Loyal’s roster on and off the field. Guido brings vast experience after being part of Major League Soccer’s LAFC, LIGA MX side Club Tijuana and the United States Youth National Teams. He signed with SD Loyal on Sept. 1, 2020 on loan from LAFC, and became an impact player immediately. Guido went on to sign an extension with SD Loyal after the 2020 season and has since totaled 79 USL Championship appearances, playing 5,599 minutes heading into this weekend’s match at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday, June 24 (4 p.m. PT).
Guido is the fifth SD Loyal player to be named to The USL Championship’s Team of the Week in 2023. Striker Ronaldo Damus was voted Player of the Week on June 6 for his brace in the club’s 3-3 draw at San Antonio FC. Joe Corona was named in April, while Koke Vegas and Jackson Simba were each honored in March. Corona earned the recognition for his performance in the club’s 1-0 win against Tampa Bay Rowdies on April 23. Vegas was named to the best XI for his shutout outing against Phoenix Rising FC on March 19. Simba attained opening week honors after scoring the game-winner against Detroit City FC in SD Loyal’s season opening 1-0 win.
SD Loyal’s upcoming match at Pittsburgh will be the first of four-straight road matches. The club will return home on Sunday, July 30 (3 p.m.) to host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Tickets to that match start at just $15 and are available now at sdloyal.com/tickets.
