Koke Vegas, Grant Stoneman and Collin Martin added for Week 22 performances
SAN DIEGO (Aug. 9, 2022) – San Diego Loyal SC had three players named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for their performances in the club’s 3-0 win against first place San Antonio FC Saturday night.
Defender Grant Stoneman scored a goal and captained the defensive unit while Collin Martin was a huge factor in the midfield with his defending, attacking and ball distribution. SD Loyal goalkeeper Koke Vegas kept a clean sheet against one of the league’s top offenses.
Stoneman scored SD Loyal’s second goal via a header after a defender deflected a cross from Alejandro Guido. He also made five clearances, six recoveries and completed 32 of 41 passes overall in the contest. Stoneman’s score was his second in consecutive weeks as he also scored the week before in SD Loyal’s 3-2 win over Orange County SC.
Martin continued to be an integral part of the SD Loyal midfield with a standout two-way performance in the center of the pitch. He completed 48 of 56 passes and notched two chances created while winning 10 of 14 duels and 4 of 6 tackles and recording 10 recoveries defensively.
Vegas earned his fourth shutout of the season. The Spanish-born goalkeeper had a three-saves including key stops to deny San Antonio’s Connor Maloney and Justin Dhillon.
Stoneman, Martin and Vegas mark the sixth, seventh and eighth instances where SD Loyal players have been named to the league’s Team of the Week. Tumi Moshobane and Alejandro Guido made their first appearances early in the season, forward Kyle Vassell was named in April and Moshobane and Guido received their second honors in July.
