Club will be on the road in its second match in the historic soccer tournament
SAN DIEGO (April 8, 2022) – San Diego Loyal SC has an opponent for the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Coach Landon Donovan’s team will travel to face LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer in a third round match of the national historic competition that pairs teams from every level of play into a tournament.
SD Loyal drew LA Galaxy Friday morning during U.S. Soccer’s draw that aligned teams based on geographical region. This will be the first time SD Loyal will face LA Galaxy and an MLS club in official competition. The third round introduces teams from Major League Soccer into the U.S. Open Cup . The third round match will take place April 19 (7:30 p.m.) at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
“After we saw that we wouldn’t be going to Tucson, everyone was excited to have a chance to go play an MLS club,” Donovan said of facing the team where he won the MLS Cup and spent most of his playing career. “For me personally, with my history, I was excited for the opportunity for our guys to go play one of the best teams in MLS, my former team. So, it should be a great night. It’s a great opportunity. We’ve never had a chance to play an MLS team in a real game and now we have an opportunity. Our guys will be really excited and ready for it.”
SD Loyal is coming off a 2-1 second round win against Albion San Diego earlier this past Wednesday. Taylor Crull sent in a header in the 89th minute off a corner kick by Alejandro Guido to help send his team to the next round.
Donovan’s team prepares for USL Championship action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. for their next home match against the Charleston Battery at Torero Stadium.
