Cameroon international joins club ahead of 2022 season
SAN DIEGO (Feb. 23, 2022) – SD Loyal announced today it has acquired Thomas Amang via a trade with Colorado Switchbacks FC for Haji Abdikadir, pending league and federation approval. The striker joins the club ahead of its upcoming USL Championship regular season set to kick off at home on Saturday, March 12.
“We are very excited to add Thomas to our team,” said Landon Donovan, EVP of Soccer Operations and Manager. “He is a proven goalscorer with lots of experience and can play in multiple attacking positions. He is a great addition to our club.”
Amang comes from USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC where he spent the 2021 season, playing in 13 games while scoring three goals and had an assist in 804 minutes. He started in 10 games as he was part of Colorado Springs’ attacking force. The striker from Cameroon is training with SD Loyal, landing a spot on Donovan’s squad.
The 24-year-old began his pro career as a teenager in Norway. He signed with Molde FK in Norway’s top league at age 18 in 2016. He played in that country through 2019 before signing with Gimnastic, a third tier league in Spain. Amang was there until last year when he came to the United States to play with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
Abdikadir, a midfielder, played in six matches while starting in five for SD Loyal in 2021. Amang joins SD Loyal in his place, in time for the team’s two remaining preseason matches ahead of the season opener next month.
