Hospital Corpsman First Class Luis Fonseca
Hero of the Match: May 29, 2021
Petty Officer Luis Fonseca was born in Frankfurt, Federal Republic of Germany in 1980, where his father was stationed while serving in the United States Army. Upon his father’s retirement, he and his older sister moved to Fayetteville, NC. Enlisting in the Navy in 1999, Petty Officer Fonseca became a Hospital Corpsman and completed three combat tours with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions while with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. Petty Officer Fonseca recently retired after 21 years of service, and is a strong advocate for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Information Systems Technician Third Class Marc Peoples
Hero of the Match: June 12, 2021
Information Systems Technician Marc Peoples was born in Gum and raised in Texas. As an Information Technician attached to Electronics Support Detachment San Diego, he is part of a team that maintains the United States Coast Guard information technology infrastructure throughout southern California. In addition to enjoying sports such as soccer and basketball, he is a lifelong fan of anime and video games.
Corporal Kendall Ritchie
Hero of the Match: June 19, 2021
Corporal Kendall Ritchie was born in Winston-Salem, NC and enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduating from the North Carolina Leadership Academy in 2018. After completing recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC, he completed the Marine Combat Training course before reporting to Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL for Avionics training and to Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach VA for follow on schools. He is currently assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, where he is assigned a leadership role in developing junior Marines.
Staff Sergeant James Meas
Hero of the Match: June 29, 2021
Staff Sergeant James Meas, United States Army, was born and raised in Fairfield CA with his two other sisters. He graduated from Sem Yeto High School and enlisted in the Army in 2009 as a wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. Staff Sergeant Meas went to basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After 3 years of service, he changed his military occupation to Cavalry Scout. He has served in many locations including Fort Irwin California, Fort Stewart Georgia, Fort Wainwright Alaska, and he is currently nearing the end of his tour as an Army Recruiter in San Diego CA.
Staff Sergeant Meas deployed to Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013 where he earned the Combat Action Badge. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Army Achievement Medal (6 awards), the Mechanics Badge, and the Recruiter Badge. SSG Meas is married and has 3 daughters.
Technical Sergeant Irma Meza- Orozco
Hero of the Match: July 3, 2021
Technical Sergeant Irma Meza- Orozco, United States Air Force, is assigned as an Enlisted Accessions Recruiter in San Diego, California and is responsible for recruiting quality individuals from San Diego County and Yuma, Arizona. She initially entered the Air Force on June 14, 2005. First assignment was Anchorage, Alaska where she began her career as a Dental Assistant. She has completed two humanitarian missions in Northern Alaska and Punta Gorda, Belize. Her last duty assignment was at Buckley-Garrison, Colorado prior to reporting as a Recruiter in her hometown of Chula Vista, California.
She has earned the Air Force Commendation Medal (2 Awards), the Air Force Good Conduct Medal (4 awards) and the National Defense Service Medal.
Reserve Petty Officer Second Class Robert Ford
Hero of the Match: July 14, 2021
Robert Ford, a native of San Diego and a 1985 graduate of Bonita Vista High School, is a former U. S. Navy Reserve Petty Officer Second Class. As a Hospital Corpsman, he was called to active duty in 1991/92 to support Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Since leaving the Navy, he has continued to serve the San Diego community as a teacher at Rosa Parks Elementary School in the San Diego Unified School District
Hero of the Match: July 24, 2021
Born and raised in Lima, Peru; CDR Ormeno enlisted in the US Navy in 1998. CDR Ormeno obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Old Dominion University while finishing her shore tour at Naval Base Norfolk, VA. Selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program to attend New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, she completed her internship and residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Following completion of her psychiatric residency, she served as Staff Psychiatrist at Naval Hospital Guam and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where she served as Department Head of Mental Health at NATO Role III in Kandahar and senior psychiatrist for the South Helmand province. She currently serves as the Regional Mental Health Senior Executive for Naval Medical Forces Pacific and the Navy Psychiatry Specialty Leader.
Lance Corporal Sasha Gomez
Hero of the Match: August 7, 2021
Lance Corporal Gomez was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Hazelton, PA and Orlando, FL. Enlisting after graduating from high school, she completed initial recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC. She is currently assigned to the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. In her free time, she is an avid gamer who goes to the gym and also loves art and anime.
Chief Petty Officer Craig Calhoun
Hero of the Match: August 14, 2021
Chief Petty Officer Calhoun enlisted in 1983 and completed basic training at Naval Training Center Orlando. In 1985 he joined the Submarine force, serving on USS Cavala, USS Salt Lake City, USS Houston and USS Chicago while completing five Western Pacific deployments during a 23 year career. A veteran of Desert Storm, Chief Calhoun was awarded three Navy Commendation Medals and eight Navy Achievement Medals. He is also a proud member of the Order of the Golden Shellback and the Order of the Ditch as well as being a Blue Nose Mariner.
Paramedic Cliff Baldwin and Paramedic Don Sullivan
Heroes of the Match: August 18, 2021
Cliff Baldwin, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and Don Sullivan, are paramedics with American Medical Response. As members of the company’s COVID Response Team, they worked tirelessly during the pandemic to ensure the safety of San Diego residents.
Master Sergeant Ruben Vasquez
Hero of the Match: August 21, 2021
Originally from New York, NY, Master Sergeant Vasquez enlisted in the Marine Corps in November, 1999, and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Paris Island, SC. Upon completion, he received training at Marine Combat Training Battalion (MCT), Camp Lejeune, NC. Having served over twenty-one years, MSgt Vazquez is currently serving as the Logistics Chief at Marine Aircraft Group 16 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. MSgt Vazquez is married to Ruby Vazquez. They have three children Ruben Jr., Megan S., and Ana.
Hospital Corpsman First Class Andres Sanchez
Hero of the Match: September 5, 2021
Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Andres enlisted in February of 2008 as a Navy Corpsman. After sustaining career ending knee and back injuries, he was honorably discharged in June of 2014. During his time on Active Duty, he completed two deployments to Afghanistan with Second Battalion, Third Marines and First Battalion, Fourth Marines. Since leaving the Navy, He and his wife, Brooke, have started a successful e-commerce business.
Intelligence Specialist Second Class My’Keyo Moore-Jones
Hero of the Match: September 19, 2021
A native of Los Angeles, Petty Officer Moore-Jones enlisted in January of 2008. In his time on active duty, he has deployed to Afghanistan, where he provided support to Army Special Operations Forces, and to Bahrain as a member of Coastal Patrol Squadron ONE. He is currently assigned to Undersea Warfare Development Command at Navy Base Point Loma Harbor Drive Annex.
Captain Sarah Bettencourt
Hero of the Match: October 9, 2021
Captain Bettencourt was training as a helicopter pilot when a rare neurological disorder forced her to medically retire in 2012. With her constantly changing and often serious symptoms, Sarah struggled to find her place back in society until she was introduced to adaptive sports. Since then, Sarah has founded San Diego Ducks Sled Hockey, is a Defenseman on the U.S. Women’s Sled Hockey Team, is on the U.S. National Para Surf Team, and is the reigning world champion in the Women’s Para Surf Prone 1 Division. Sarah lives a full and happy life with her husband and two sons in their Gary Sinise Foundation home, serving others through adaptive sports and representing her nation in sled hockey and surfing.
Former U.S. Army Sergeant Kevin Wadley
Hero of the Match: October 17, 2021
Enlisting as an Infantryman in 1996, Sergeant Wadley deployed to Egypt in 1997 as part of the Multinational Force and Observer Mission with the 101st Airborne Division. Becoming a military police officer in 2000, Sergeant Wadley deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 with the 1st Armored Division. Going on to become a military working dog handler, he was honorably discharged in 2010.
Aviation Ordnanceman Randy Hernandez
Hero of the Match: October 24, 2021
Originally from Orange, California, Petty Officer Hernandez enlisted in the Navy in 2004 and has served our nation for seventeen years. He recently returned from an eight-month long deployment where he was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal for superior performance of his duties. Petty Officer Hernandez is currently assigned to USS Makin Island at Naval Base San Diego, is a San Diego Loyal season ticket member, and is a member of the Locals supporters Group.
